You might have heard of the New Jersey Lemon Law, but do you know the specifics of what it covers and how it can help to protect you during the used vehicle purchasing process? Here at Sansone Auto, we want all customers to drive away happy. That’s why we’re sharing all you need to know about the New Jersey Lemon Law, so you’ll be protected on the car-buying journey.

New Jersey Lemon Law Explained

The New Jersey Lemon Law is designed to protect drivers whose vehicles experience repeat defects during the first two years or 24,000 miles of use. If the car has been rendered unsuitable for significant periods of time at no fault of the owner, then it may fall under New Jersey Lemon Law coverage.

The law covers both new and pre-owned vehicles, including motorcycles, motorhomes, authorized emergency vehicles, and passenger motor vehicles. It does not apply to commercial vehicles or the living quarters of motorhomes.

To qualify for coverage under the law, responsibility for the damage must fall on the seller. Damage caused by owner use or neglect, including at-home repairs or modifications, would not be covered under the Lemon Law.

What Should I Do If I Think My Car Qualifies?

It’s a good idea to keep closely detailed records of all your service and repair reports, especially if you suspect your vehicle is a “lemon”. Remember, you have to file your paperwork before the two-year or 24,000-mile mark, so act quickly.

The “lemon” designation will be made by the New Jersey Department of Law & Public Safety. If approval is granted, you will visit an MVC Vehicle Center and bring several essential documents to complete the process, including the title and the “Lemon” approval letter.
